Ashley Vellucci scored twice in the first seven minutes on Wednesday afternoon as the Shippensburg University women's soccer team posted its highest single-game scoring output in two years en route to a 5-1 triumph at Mansfield for its second consecutive road PSAC win.
The five goals are the most for the Raiders (5-4-3, 3-4-2 PSAC) in almost exactly two years, with the last occurrence being, ironically enough, a 5-1 victory over Mansfield on Oct. 2, 2010.
Despite the two teams being even in shots (13 each) and Mansfield (2-7-1, 0-6-1) holding a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks, SU made the most of its opportunities, sending 10 shots on goal with five finding the back of the net.
Vellucci headed in the first score of the game less than three minutes into the contest off an assist from junior
Rachel Hess. Vellucci pushed the lead to 2-0 under four minutes later when she took a pass from senior
Rhonda Runion, beat a defender and sent a shot into the corner of the goal.
Up 2-1 twelve minutes into the second half, Shippensburg was awarded a penalty kick after the Mansfield goalkeeper drew a red card. Senior
Molly Sanders subbed in and took the kick, sending it into the upper left side for a 3-1 SU lead.
The goal was just Sanders' second of her career and her first since, oddly enough, the aforementioned 5-1 win at Mansfield in 2010. The penalty kick also marked the first time in four seasons that Shippensburg has scored on a penalty kick, with the last coming from Gayle Kuntzmann in a 2-1 home loss to West Chester on Oct. 1, 2008.
Sophomore
Kate Zech and junior
Meghan Mahon each scored within a five-minute span late in regulation on Wednesday, with Zech's strike coming off a cross from sophomore
Brooke Clippinger and Mahon's an unassisted shot from 20 yards out that sailed over the Mountaineer goalie's outstretched hands.
Zech led the Raiders with three shots while junior goalie
Shelbie Rackley made six saves in net.
Through the first 10 games of the season, Shippensburg had scored a total of seven goals. With a 2-0 win at Slippery Rock on Saturday, the Raiders have matched that total in their last two contests.
SU returns home on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest against East Stroudsburg.
