SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team fought back from an early two-goal deficit on Saturday afternoon but was unable to record an equalizer in the second-half as the Raiders fell to Gannon, 2-1, on Senior Day from David See Field.
The Raiders (6-7-3, 4-7-2 PSAC) fell behind 2-0 less than five minutes in after two quick strikes from the Golden Knights (11-3-1, 8-3-1 PSAC), including one on a header off a corner kick. Those would be the only two goals that SU junior goalkeeper
Samantha Wood would allow, however, as she played the entire contest and finished with three saves.
Shippensburg received help in their comeback bid just six minutes before the end of the half, however, when Gannon received a red card and was forced to compete a player down for the remainder of the contest.
The Raiders took advantage just over a minute into the second half when graduate
Cassie Armold headed in a goal off a corner kick from junior
Rachel Hess that cut Gannon's lead in half. It was Armold's first goal of the season and her first since the third game of the 2010 campaign.
Shippensburg had several scoring chances in the second half and out-shot the Golden Knights 8-4 in the period but failed to net the tying goal. Armold, Hess and juniors
Ashley Vellucci and
Kylee Bricker each had quality opportunities with under 10 minutes to play but their shot's failed to find the back of the net.
The Raiders celebrated Senior Day before the game and honored their five seniors – Wood, Armold,
Katie Leverentz,
Rhonda Runion and
Molly Sanders.
SU travels to Chestnut Hill on Thursday for its road finale – a 4 p.m. contest against the Griffins.
