SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team hung tight with No. 6-ranked and PSAC-leading Gannon throughout the game on Saturday afternoon before the Golden Knights netted the golden goal nearly four minutes into the second overtime to prevail with a 2-1 victory from David See Field.
The Raiders (4-8-2, 2-5-1 PSAC) and Gannon (12-2, 6-1) were nearly even in shots (18-17, respectively), while SU held a 7-5 advantage in corners.
After a scoreless first half, Tyler Hollingsworth put the Golden Knights on top six minutes into the second half on a cross from Gavin Linsell.
Shippensburg managed just two shots in the second half until a Gannon foul in the box at the 74th minute allowed senior
Sam Talbot to tie the game with a penalty kick goal – his team-leading seventh tally of the season and fifth on a penalty kick.
The two teams went 29 minutes without another goal – including a scoreless first overtime – until Gannon's Gavin Linsell finished off a quick breakaway with a cross to teammate Sean Washek on the left side, who chipped in the game-winner over the head of Shippensburg senior goalkeeper
Andrew Foran and into the back right of the net.
The Raiders head to NYIT on Wednesday for their road finale – a 3 p.m. matchup against the Bears.
