Monae Baker to break open a close game and defeat Slippery Rock, 61-47, from Morrow Field House.
Shippensburg (6-6, 3-5 PSAC) closed the game with a 21-7 run over the final eight minutes. With the score tied 40-40, Baker hit a jumper to begin a 12-0 run for the Raiders. In fact, SU's extended run was an 18-1 stretch that extended into the game's final 40 seconds. The Raiders made 11-of-13 free throws down the stretch to cement the victory.
Dana Wert led all scorers with 20 points, going 5-of-9 from the floor and making 9-of-11 free-throw attempts. Baker added 10 of her 14 points in the second half and finished with seven rebounds. Junior
Caitlin Bamberger added 12 rebounds for the Raiders – a total that is one short of her career high.
Sophomore
Sarah Strybuc finished with 18 points, one short of her career high, shooting 6-of-12 overall including a 4-of-7 proficiency from three-point range. Strybuc totaled 29 points in two games this weekend – 23 of which came in the first half – and made seven three-pointers.
Slippery Rock (4-8, 1-7 PSAC) was doomed by separate scoring droughts of six and seven minutes in the contest. The Rock attempted 19 three-pointers and made just three, shooting 31 percent overall from the field. Forward Danielle Smith led the team with 14 points, including 10 in the first half.
Shippensburg opens PSAC Eastern Division play at 6 p.m. Wednesday from Heiges Field House against Bloomsburg.
