SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – All five starters scored at least nine points on Saturday afternoon as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team held East Stroudsburg to below 30-percent shooting in a 63-44 victory from Heiges Field House.
Junior
Shawna Wert led the Raiders (8-8, 5-7 PSAC) with 13 points, while junior
Dana Wert tallied nine points to go along with five rebounds. The Wert twins combined to shoot 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from the field and 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from three-point range.
Senior
Monae Baker recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. Junior
Caitlin Bamberger fell just short of registering a double-double, as she went 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to finish with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Sophomore
Sarah Strybuc made two three-pointers en route to 10 points and a game-high five assists. It was the second time in three games that Strybuc has contributed five assists, which are her career high.
Off the bench, sophomore
Raediah Lyles added four points and two rebounds, senior
Lindsay Howard contributed two points and four rebounds and junior
Morgan Taylor scored three points.
The Shippensburg defense was spectacular throughout the game, as East Stroudsburg's (6-10, 3-9) field goal percentage (24.6) is the lowest Shippensburg has allowed to a PSAC opponent in seven seasons. Slippery Rock shot 20.8 percent in a Raiders' 62-33 victory on Jan. 29, 2005.
The Raiders got off to a quick 10-0 lead nearly three minutes into the game and refused to let up en route to a 31-6 halftime lead. The six first-half points by ESU are the lowest an SU team has allowed in a half in recent memory.
Shippensburg held ESU to just six points for a 14-minute stretch that spanned both halves. SU led by as many as 37 points in the second half, up 49-12 with 11:33 left. The Warriors went on separate runs of 8-0, 5-0 and 7-0 to finish the game and lower SU's winning margin to just 19.
Freshmen
Jen Kalinowski and
Samantha Damiano each earned playing time for the first time in their careers. Kalinowski logged three minutes while Damiano played one.
Shippensburg will travel to Millersville on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. clash with the Marauders from Pucillo Gymnasium.
