SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team beat Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon from Robb Sports Complex, 7-0, in its first game of the season. Sophomore forward
Bre White had a hat trick and the Raiders limited the visitors to just two shots in the contest.
The Raiders (1-0) – hosts of the season-opening four-team tournament that also includes Mansfield and Southern Connecticut State – led a balanced game offensively with five different players scoring goals to beat the Purple Knights (0-1).
White opened up the scoring with the lone goal of the first half just four minutes into the game off of an assist by senior forward
Kristina Taylor. White added two more goals in the second half – one off of another assist from Taylor – for the first hat trick of her career.
A pair of SU goalkeepers combined for the shutout, with junior
Ciarra Delost playing the first half. Thanks to SU's staunch defense, Delost had just one save in the half, but it was an impressive one as she stopped a high penalty shot near her left shoulder from Saint Michaels' Taylor Wahrenbrock. The Raider defense didn't let up after halftime, as sophomore
Carenna Neely made no saves in her second-half appearance.
Senior forward
Katie Pufnock added two goals in the second frame, while freshman forward
Tori Ricker and junior forward
Emily Kohlbus added the final goals on the afternoon. Junior
Jamie Levy and sophomore
Brynn Seidenstricker also finished with assists.
SU has won its last nine meetings over Saint Michael's by a 50-8 margin.
Shippensburg plays Southern Connecticut State on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Robb Sports Complex.
