SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Redshirt freshman
Kate Zech knocked in the lone goal of Wednesday afternoon's match as the Shippensburg University women's soccer team earned an important PSAC victory with a 1-0 shutout of Mercyhurst from David See Field.
Shippensburg (4-3-3, 2-2-2 PSAC) and Mercyhurst (3-4, 2-3) played a virtually even match but the Raiders capitalized on a fortunate break with just 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Mercyhurst goalkeeper attempted to make a clear from the goalie box but sent the ball right to Zech, who controlled the ball in the box and trickled her shot into the goal past the fallen keeper.
The Raiders recorded a 13-11 advantage in shots and a 10-9 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper
Shelbie Rackley made two saves in the victory.
Wednesday's game is the fifth 1-0 decision of the year. SU is now 2-3 in 1-0 decisions this year. Nine of Shippensburg's 10 games have either been decided by one goal or ended in a tie.
After playing seven of its last eight matches at David See Field, the Raiders have just two home matches remaining among their final eight contests.
Shippensburg starts a four-game road trip at 3 p.m. Saturday from Gannon.
