WHAG-25: "Chat With Mac" Video Report (Friday morning)
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Shippensburg University football team will begin its 2011 home schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium with a PSAC crossover matchup against Clarion. The Red Raiders have won eight straight meetings against Clarion and have not lost to the Golden Eagles since 2000.
Tickets for the game are $8 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and non-PSAC students. Shippensburg students and PSAC students are admitted free with their student ID. Children ages five and under also receive free admission.
Live video coverage of the game will be provided by Shippensburg University's student television station (SUTV) and can be accessed online through the link above. The game will also be shown on local cable television on Comcast community access channel 21 and campus channel 82. Student broadcasters Jon Bloch and Kristen Wright will call the action.
A student-radio broadcast of the game will be available on 88.7 FM in Shippensburg and can be accessed online through the link above. Student broadcasters Sean Gallagher and Chris Field will call the action.
In its last three seasons as a member of the PSAC Eastern Division, Shippensburg is 7-3 against teams from the PSAC Western Division. That includes a 28-24 victory over Clarion last season.
Shippensburg's first five opponents in 2011 combined for a 39-20 record last season. That group includes nationally-ranked Shepherd and Kutztown along with private school opponents C.W. Post and Gannon, which both finished above .500 in 2010.
Shippensburg was picked sixth in the PSAC Eastern Division coaches poll while Clarion was picked seventh in the PSAC Western Division coaches poll.
The Red Raiders are 1-1 after racking up 475 yards of total offense, scoring 31 points before halftime and forcing five turnovers in a convincing 41-13 road victory over Gannon – the first win for SU head coach Mark 'Mac' Maciejewski.
The Golden Eagles are 0-2 after a 45-10 home loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday. Sophomore quarterback Ben Fiscus threw for 171 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
SERIES HISTORY: RED RAIDERS VS. GOLDEN EAGLES
Clarion leads the overall series with Shippensburg, 32-20-1, with the Golden Eagles holding an 11-8-1 record in games held at Shippensburg. However, the Red Raiders have won the last eight meetings and 11 of the last 12.
Shippensburg's offense has thrived in the last 13 meetings. With the exception of a 13-0 shutout over Clarion in 2003, the Red Raiders have scored at least 20 points in every game of the series dating back to 1996. Over the last six meetings, SU has outscored Clarion 198-57.
The Golden Eagles posted a record of 28-6-1 in the series' first 35 games, including 14-straight wins from 1964-77. Shippensburg has turned the tide since 1988, posting a 15-6 record over the last 21 meetings.
The last win for Clarion in the series came in 2000 during an offensive shootout, 56-49 from Memorial Stadium. The game is quite possibly the most exciting matchup the two teams have ever had. SU trailed 56-21 with 1:14 remaining in the third quarter and scored 28 unanswered points to get within a touchdown in the final two minutes.
Clarion and Shippensburg combined for 967 yards of total offense, 42 first downs and 15 touchdowns in that game. In a battle of the quarterbacks, Adam Almashy threw for 282 yards and five touchdowns on 16-of-26 passing while Chris Gicking completed 19-of-36 attempts for 303 yards and five touchdowns. The Red Raiders' Melvin Scott and Josh Jarzyk each had 100 yards receiving with 101 and 100 yards, respectively.
