SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The No. 4-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team opened PSAC Western Division play on the road Tuesday afternoon by recording a 5-0 shutout of Slippery Rock. SU has won 19 consecutive PSAC West matches dating back to Oct. 8, 2008.
Junior
Taylor Jones had her breakout performance of the season as she played a part in the Raiders' (3-2, 1-0 PSAC West) first three goals of the game. Jones scored in the 25th and 34th minutes, each assisted by sophomore
Bre White off penalty corners, to give Ship a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the second period, Jones provided a pass on a penalty corner that senior
Katie Pufnock converted into a goal. The five points were the first of the season for Jones.
Just over three minutes later, Pufnock found the back of the cage again, this time off of a pass from senior
Kristina Taylor, who scored a goal herself just minutes later off another White assist.
The SU defense held tough all game, allowing just one Slippery Rock shot. Sophomore goalkeeper
Carenna Neely set that shot aside for her only save. Neely started her second game of the season and posted the first shutout of her career. Pufnock's two goals give her a team-leading seven on the season.
The victory snapped Shippensburg's two-game losing skid. The Raiders now prepare for a weekend homestand, as they're set to battle C.W. Post on Friday and East Stroudsburg on Saturday. Both contests begin at 1 p.m.
