Women’s Basketball Triumphs in its Season Finale; Defeating East Stroudsburg, 89-75

SU puts five in double figures; Gardner scores 28 and gets career-high seven steals

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior Kasey Gardner scored 28 points and had a career-high seven steals in her final collegiate basketball contest on Saturday afternoon from Heiges Field House as the Shippensburg women's basketball team concluded the regular season with an 89-75 victory over East Stroudsburg.

Shippensburg (12-14, 7-7 PSAC East) took an eight-point lead into the locker room and used a 14-3 run in the first four-plus minutes of the second half to take control, leading 50-31 with 15:44 remaining. SU led by as many as 26 points in the second half ; matched its season high with 20 assists, and had five of its players finish in double figures.

Gardner was all over the court from the opening tip, beginning with an assist on the first possession of the game. Her 28 points matches a season high that was achieved twice (January 3 at Edinboro and January 19 at Bloomsburg). Her previous career high in steals was five, set on multiple occasions. Gardner also contributed eight rebounds and five assists in the contest.

Sophomore guard Shawna Wert scored 18 points; shooting 8-of-8 from the free-throw line, and dished out a career-high eight assists while committing just one turnover.

Wert led the PSAC during the regular season with 149 made free throws, shooting 85 percent from the charity stripe this season, while ranking second on the team with 318 total points.

Junior forward Monae Baker contributed 12 points and seven rebounds in 17 solid minutes off the bench. She was 4-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line in the game. Baker averaged 9.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game through 16 contests this season.

Sophomore guard Dana Wert scored 10 points, dished out five assists, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals in her final game of the season. Wert was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line and finished the season 114-of-133 (85.7 percent) at the free-throw line.

She also finished the year with 121 assists – the most by a Raider in a season since Michelle Metz had 140 in the 2007-08 season.

Sophomore forward Caitlin Bamberger was the fifth SU player in double figures, scoring 10 points. She was 5-of-9 from the floor and also grabbed eight rebounds. SU dominated the glass in the contest, out-rebounding the Warriors by a 45-32 margin.

Gardner, a criminal justice major, finished her career with 1,745 points in 111 career games. Her point total ranks sixth in school history - just 20 points behind head coach Kristy Trn '93/'94M - and 26th in PSAC history.

A two-time All-PSAC performer, Gardner scored 20 or more points in a game 34 times, including 11 career double-doubles, and 10 or more points in 98 of her 111 career games.

For her career, Gardner averaged 15.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, ranking fourth in school history with 679 career boards. She also concluded her collegiate career ranked fifth in career three-pointers with 186, ninth in career steals with 183 and 11th in career assists with 295.
