WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Sophomore guard
Shawna Wert scored a game-high 21 points and senior
Kasey Gardner added 17 but the Shippensburg women's basketball team dropped an 84-67 decision to West Chester on Wednesday night from Hollinger Field House.
Shippensburg (10-13, 5-6 PSAC East) trailed by double digits during the first half but got within nine at the intermission when Wert hit a three-pointer at the buzzer. SU was within five points of the lead with 16:12 to go before the hosts took control of the contest.
Gardner moved up one place in the school record books for career points and career rebounds. With 17 points, she moved past Janette Pieczynski '01 into sixth place on the school's all-time list (1,682). Her nine boards moved her past coach
Kristy Trn '93/'94M into seventh place in SU history for career rebounds.
Shawna Wert was effective from the free-throw line, making a season-high 14 free throws on 15 attempts. The previous season high was set by Wert when she had 11 makes against West Liberty. Overall on Wednesday night, Shawna had 21 points, four assists and three rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Dana Wert had a solid line on the stat sheet with 13 points and four assists. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Shippensburg continues its road trip on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Mansfield.
