CLARION, Pa. — The Shippensburg University women's basketball team used a 13-0 run late in the second half to pull away from a pesky Clarion squad on Friday night from Waldo Tippin Gymnasium and secure a 74-60 victory in its first road game of the season.
Shippensburg (5-3, 2-3 PSAC) received an SU career-high 21 points from junior point guard
Dana Wert, shooting 5-of-9 from three-point range and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. All of her field-goal attempts were three-pointers.
Dana Wert also added five assists and three steals.
Senior
Monae Baker was just short of a double-double, contributing nine points and 14 rebounds. Junior
Caitlin Bamberger was also vigilant and persistent in the post, scoring 13 points and adding eight boards.
Junior
Shawna Wert had an outstanding second half, particularly down the stretch, scoring 13 of her 15 points in the second half.
Shawna Wert hit a pair of three-pointers and was 9-of-10 at the free-throw line in the contest to go along with six rebounds and four assists.
Clarion (1-5, 1-3 PSAC) got 17 points from Courtney Healy and 13 points off the bench from Mackenzie Clark. Carlisle native Emma Fickel scored eight points.
SU held a 29-20 lead with 4:47 remaining in the first half before the Golden Eagles embarked on an 11-2 run to tie the score at 31-31 with 11 seconds left in the frame. Senior
Erin Varley got open in the corner and drained a three-pointer with two seconds left on the clock to put the Raiders up 34-31 at intermission.
Dana Wert had 13 points at halftime, including three 3-pointers and a 4-4 proficiency from the free-throw line. The fourth three-pointer of the game by
Dana Wert and a jumper from Baker put SU up by six points, 45-39, with 13:55 to go.
Each team had a propensity to exchange mini runs throughout the second half, and the Golden Eagles once again answered to tie the score at 49-49 with 10:53 left on the clock. The two teams would then play the next 2 minutes, 19 seconds without a point until
Dana Wert hit her fifth three-pointer of the game with 8:34 left to put SU up 52-49.
With 3:30 left on the clock,
Shawna Wert drained a crucial three-pointer off an assist from sophomore
Morgan Taylor that put the Lady Raiders up 63-55. SU's decisive run continued until the Golden Eagles scored in the final 90 seconds.
Sophomore
Sarah Strybuc also added nine points for the Raiders.
Shippensburg is back in action tomorrow from Erie when it takes on Gannon at 2 p.m.
