SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team couldn't overcome the efficient shooting of visiting Lock Haven on Sunday afternoon, falling 66-54 in the second of two PSAC weekend crossover games from Heiges Field House.
Senior
Monae Baker led the Raiders (4-3, 1-3 PSAC) with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds – her fourth double-double in the team's first seven games this season.
Junior
Dana Wert contributed 16 points – including a perfect 8-for-8 performance from the free throw line – and a game-high six assists.
Shippensburg led the Lady Eagles (4-3, 3-1) in the early stages of the first half, but a 13-0 Lock Haven run put the Raiders in an eight-point hole, down 26-18 with 5:43 left in the period.
Lock Haven eventually extended the lead to 12 exactly three minutes later, but sophomore
Sarah Strybuc hit a running jumper at the top of the key at the buzzer to finish off an SU 5-0 run and close the halftime deficit to seven, 34-27. Strybuc added two three-pointers to finish with eight points on the afternoon.
Just over two minutes into the second half, Lock Haven had scored the first seven points and opened up a 14-point advantage. SU made several runs in the period – closing the gap to four points with 12 minutes left and six points with 2:10 remaining – but couldn't string together enough points to counter Lock Haven's 44.6 percent shooting day (25-for-56 from the field).
Shippensburg, meanwhile, had its lowest shooting game of the season – finishing just 30.2 percent from the field. At the free throw line, however, SU was very efficient, going 11-of-13 from the stripe to shoot 84.6 percent – its highest mark this season.
The Raiders travel to PSAC West foe Clarion on Friday for their first road contest of the season. The game is set for 5:30 p.m.
