ERIE, Pa. — Junior
Shawna Wert scored a game-high 19 points on Saturday afternoon from the Hammermill Center but the Shippensburg University women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 64-59 decision to Gannon, an undefeated squad currently atop the PSAC Western Division standings.
Shippensburg (5-4, 2-4 PSAC) trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half but kept pushing forward, playing to within two possessions of the hosts for the majority of the second half. SU managed its second tie of the final frame with 9:49 to play but was never able to take the lead against the Golden Knights.
The Raiders were within four points of the lead with 2:13 remaining but did not get any closer down the stretch.
Junior
Dana Wert finished close to a triple-double with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Her eight rebounds are a new career high while her seven assists are a season high.
Shawna Wert was 11-of-12 at the free-throw line for the second time this season, matching her performance in the second game of the season versus Chowan. For the season, Shawna is 60-of-70 from the free-throw line (85.7 percent).
Senior
Monae Baker nearly had a double-double, posting 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior
Caitlin Bamberger joined Baker in the post, finishing with seven points and six boards.
Shippensburg returns to action Friday, December 30 with a 4 p.m. road contest against West Virginia Wesleyan.
