SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Senior
Monae Baker had a dominant game for the Shippensburg University women's basketball team on Tuesday night from Heiges Field House, scoring 21 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds to propel the Raiders to a 55-48 victory in a defensive struggle with CIAA foe Virginia State.
Shippensburg (4-1) had its best defensive game of the season, holding the Trojans (4-4) to 48 points on 30 percent shooting – the lowest respective totals by an opponent in Shippensburg's five games this year.
Baker's double-double was her third of the season, and her 13 rebounds were the most she has grabbed in a game since totaling 18 in last year's season-opening win over Shepherd. Tuesday night's victory marked Baker's second 20-point game this season, as she went 7-for-11 from the field while adding two blocks on the defensive end.
Sophomore
Raediah Lyles was outstanding off the bench on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Lyles was SU's second-leading scorer, finishing with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, including one three-pointer. It was her second-highest point total in a game, as she scored 10 in a win over Cheyney last season.
Juniors
Dana Wert and
Shawna Wert each scored seven points, while Dana contributed a game-high six assists.
Sophomore
Sarah Strybuc finished with six points off of two three-pointers. She also added a game-high three steals to go along with five rebounds, good for second-most on the team.
Shippensburg faces off against No. 11 Edinboro, the defending PSAC champions, at 1 p.m. Saturday from Heiges Field House.
