SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team opened up its PSAC schedule on Saturday afternoon with a nail-biting 59-57 victory over California (Pa.) from Heiges Field House.
The win was the Raiders' (3-0, 1-0 PSAC) first over the Vulcans (1-2, 0-1 PSAC) since a 79-68 home victory on Feb. 19, 2007, and snapped SU's seven-game losing streak in the series.
Four Shippensburg players scored in double figures, led by junior
Shawna Wert, who scored 14 points to go along with five rebounds. Reigning PSAC East Player of the Week
Monae Baker posted her second consecutive double-double, as the senior finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Junior
Dana Wert scored 11 points and added a team-high five assists, while junior
Caitlin Bamberger went 6-for-6 from the free throw line and scored 10 points to go along with eight rebounds.
SU had as much as a seven-point lead toward the end of the first half and entered the break up four. But the Vulcans quickly fought back in the second half, eventually grabbing a six-point lead with just over eight minutes left in regulation.
A pair of free throws by
Dana Wert with 1:09 left was the game's 13th and final lead change, and gave the Raiders a 58-57 lead.
After the teams traded turnovers on the next two possessions,
Shawna Wert rebounded a missed California (Pa.) three-point attempt with 16 ticks left in the game. Junior
Morgan Taylor was fouled with nine seconds left and made the second of two free throws.
Down two with just over five seconds left in the game, California (Pa.) got the ball into the hands of reigning PSAC West Player of the Week Amy Johns – the game's high scorer with 20 points – but the senior missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.
SU's 3-0 record is its best start to a season since it started 5-0 in the 2008-09 season.
