LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Sophomore
Ashley Vellucci scored on a header just over a minute and a half into the game and the Shippensburg University women's soccer team never looked back on Saturday afternoon, beating Mansfield, 3-1.
Vellucci scored the goal off of a corner kick from senior
Brittany Hibshman. The Raiders (5-5-3, 3-4-2 PSAC) would hold the 1-0 lead for much of the half, until redshirt-freshman
Kate Zech found the ball in a crowded box and connected with 1:25 remaining in the period for her third goal of the season.
Mansfield (1-8, 0-7) added its lone goal of the afternoon nearly 15 minutes into the second half when a shot by Danielle Murray tipped off the gloves of SU sophomore goalkeeper
Samantha Wood, who made her second start of the season and first since a 1-0 road loss to West Virginia Wesleyan on Sept. 3. Wood didn't see much action on Saturday, however, as the Raiders' defense held the Mounties to just four shots on the game.
Later in the half, Hibshman tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season on a breakaway off a pass from sophomore
Nicole Good.
Shippensburg got off 26 shots and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. The game had originally been scheduled as a home game for Mansfield, but it was moved to Lock Haven because of poor field conditions.
The Raiders travel to Clarion on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. clash with the Golden Eagles.
