SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Playing in just her third game of the season, junior forward
Sam Langone scored her first two goals of 2011 to spark the Shippensburg University field hockey team to a 4-1 Senior Day victory over Slippery Rock from Robb Sports Complex on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Before the game, Shippensburg's (12-2, 6-0 PSAC West) four seniors –
Katie Pufnock,
Alyssa Stefanadis,
Jenna Stine and
Kristina Taylor – were honored for their contributions to the program.
Stefanadis earned her first career start in goal and played just over 50 minutes, allowing one score and saving one shot. Stine, a defender, also earned her first career start in a Raider uniform after having transferred from Slippery Rock after her sophomore year.
But it was a group of non-seniors that led SU to its sixth straight PSAC West victory and its second win over The Rock (3-11, 2-4) this season. Just over 11 minutes into the contest, sophomore
Lauren Taylor and Langone scored the game's first two goals less than two minutes apart, with sophomore
Bre White assisting Langone on her first goal of 2011.
Langone – who sat out most of the year while recovering from a leg injury and made her season debut vs. Kutztown on Sept. 30 – added her second goal off of an assist from junior
Taylor Jones just under 10 minutes later.
Eight minutes into the second half, White added a score of her own after being rewarded a penalty stroke. White beat the SRU keeper by lasering a shot to the bottom right corner of the cage for her 15th goal of the season. With her 14th assist, White is now just three short of tying the SU single-season record.
Junior
Ciarra Delost came in to relieve Stefanadis and finished with a save in the final 19:42 of play.
Kristina Taylor finished with three shots, while Pufnock contributed many of the Raiders' 16 total corner attempts.
SU travels to Indiana (Pa.) on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. clash with the Crimson Hawks.
