SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team used early second-half strikes from seniors Katie Pufnock and Kristina Taylor to pull away from a hard-fighting Seton Hill squad on a sunny Wednesday afternoon from Robb Sports Complex en route to a 4-1 victory over the Griffins.

Shippensburg (11-2, 5-0 PSAC West) opened the scoring 11 minutes in when sophomore Bre White hammered home a rebound from the scoring area for her 14th goal of the season. Pufnock scored at 19:55 from a Taylor assist to put the Raiders up by two.

Seton Hill (2-9, 0-5 PSAC West) fought hard all afternoon and got on the board with less than six minutes remaining before halftime. Ashley Reid was unmarked in front of the net and sent a shot into the cage after Heather Apodaca pirouetted around her defender to send a pass in her direction. The Griffins recorded six penalty corners in the match while goalkeeper Rebecca Portillo made 10 saves.

The decisive Raider goals came shortly after the intermission. Pufnock's 11th tally of the season came thanks to a splendid pass into the middle of the scoring zone by junior Jamie Levy. Taylor's 16th goal of the season came less than two minutes later and was set up by White.

With her goal, Taylor moves into second place on Shippensburg's all-time goal scoring list with 73 goals. She is now one ahead of Kim Davies '08 and 16 goals short of the school record held by Ashley Watt '06.

Wednesday had its share of emotion for the Raiders.

Before the game, each Shippensburg player wore a special shirt with the name “Taylor” across the back along with the number “1.” The shirts were in recognition of Kristina's father, James Taylor, who passed away this summer from lung cancer.

Taylor was remembered as Shippensburg's “No. 1 Fan” and donations were collected in his name toward the LUNGevity foundation, an organization that provides help for those affected by lung cancer. After the game, the team met as a group along with parents, family and friends to share their memories of Mr. Taylor.

Kristina will be one of four seniors honored before Saturday's home game against Slippery Rock at 1 p.m. from Robb Sports Complex. Taylor will be recognized along with Pufnock, Alyssa Stefanadis and Jenna Stine.
