SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team honored four seniors before its 2011 regular season home finale on Saturday night but ultimately dropped a 1-0 decision to the Golden Rams of West Chester from David See Field.
Shippensburg (5-9-3, 3-8-2 PSAC) held West Chester (10-2-4, 7-2-4 PSAC) scoreless for a majority of the first half, but with just over five minutes remaining in the period, the Golden Rams' Cara Deola connected on the game-winner.
After receiving a pass from Jen Hutchinson in the box, Deola had a one-on-one with SU sophomore
Shelbie Rackley and sent a shot over the diving goalkeeper.
West Chester held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks – with all eight in the game coming in the second half – and outshot the Raiders 7-1. Rackley finished with two saves before sophomore
Samantha Wood took over in the second half.
The loss is the Raiders' seventh by a 1-0 decision this season. Before the game, Shippensburg's four seniors –
Emily Andrew,
Brittany Hibshman,
Samantha Stuart and
Cassie Armold – were honored for their contributions to the program.
Shippensburg concludes its regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday on the road against No. 4 California (Pa.). The Vulcans entered Saturday as the No. 1 seed in the PSAC and were undefeated with a 13-0-2 record (10-0-2 in PSAC play).
