LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team consistently out-chanced PSAC Western Division opponent Mansfield on Saturday afternoon but needed a second-half goal from sophomore
Lauren Taylor to outlast a vigilant Mountaineer squad, 2-1, from Lock Haven's Charlotte Smith Field.
Shippensburg (14-2, 8-0 PSAC West) opened the scoring with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half when sophomore forward
Bre White scored on a breakaway. SU out-shot Mansfield 27-4 for the match and also recorded a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Mansfield (4-10, 2-7 PSAC West) tied the game just over three minutes into the second half with the 11th goal of the season from Taryn Schawillie, who tipped in a long feed from Jillian Richards. Goalkeeper Liz Phillippy kept the Mounties in the match with 13 key saves.
Taylor's game-winning goal came with 26 minutes remaining after she tipped in a shot that had ricocheted off a defender in front of the cage. It was Taylor's sixth goal of the season and her second game-winner in 2011.
SU will play its last home match of the regular season at 4 p.m. Wednesday from Robb Sports Complex against PSAC Western Division opponent Mercyhurst.
