ATHENS, W.Va. – Sophomore
Derrick Roy scored a golden goal on Monday afternoon with just 21 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to propel the Shippensburg University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Concord from the natural grass pitch of Anderson Field.
Shippensburg (5-4-1) out-chanced the Mountain Lions in Monday's matchup but could not find the back of the net until overtime. The Raiders had five corner kicks and were whistled offsides 10 times in regulation while out-shooting the hosts 18-8 for the match.
The decisive goal by Roy was his team-leading third of the season and his second game winner. It was set up by an assist from sophomore
Tom Stagg, who made his Raider debut in the contest.
Junior goalkeeper
Andrew Foran made two saves to record the victory.
Monday's match at Concord was originally scheduled for September 7 but postponed due to rain.
Shippensburg will remain in West Virginia until Wednesday, when it faces defending WVIAC champion Charleston at noon from Schoenbaum Stadium. The contest is a re-match of last year's NCAA Division II Super Region 2 playoff matchup from Mercyhurst in which the Golden Eagles defeated the Raiders in overtime, 1-0.
