EDINBORO, Pa. – Senior
Kasey Gardner recorded season highs on Monday night with 28 points and four steals but the Shippensburg University women's basketball team could not sustain its first-half momentum from McComb Field House, dropping a 67-61 decision to the Fighting Scots of Edinboro.
Shippensburg (3-6) had an outstanding first half, closing the final three minutes of the frame with an 8-1 run to build a 40-28 advantage at the intermission. The Lady Raiders used an 11-2 run during the middle of the first half to build an 11-point advantage at the 6:09 mark. Gardner had 20 points by halftime, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and converting all five of her first-half free-throw attempts.
Edinboro (7-1) established some rhythm in the second half, shooting 44 percent from the floor during the final 20 minutes of play. Micki Cerchiaro and Kiara Brown combined for 19 second-half points after being held to zero and two points respectively in the opening frame. Brown paced the home team with 14 points.
The Fighting Scots got within two points of the lead with eight minutes to play after Gardner was whistled for her fourth personal foul. After two lead changes, Edinboro took a one-point lead with 5:04 to play and never relinquished its advantage for the remainder of the contest.
Sophomore guard
Dana Wert had a productive effort with nine points, six rebounds and six assists. Wert has scored at least seven points and recorded multiple assists in every game this season. Fellow sophomore
Shawna Wert had four points and tied her career high with seven rebounds.
Gardner finished 7-of-7 from the free-throw line and hit Shippensburg's only three-pointer of the contest. She has scored at least 15 points in every game this season and on Monday she tied Katie Bray '03 for 11th on SU's all-time scoring list.
Freshman
Sarah Strybuc logged over 30 minutes for the second time this season in her fourth career start, compiling eight points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Fellow freshmen
Ashley Giedemann and
Raediah Lyles each delivered four points and five rebounds.
Shippensburg will travel to face Lock Haven on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
