BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Kasey Gardner scored 28 points and tied a career-high with six three-pointers as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second half to earn a 69-66 win over Bloomsburg on Wednesday night from Nelson Fieldhouse.
Shippensburg (7-8, 2-1 PSAC East) led by as many as 13 points in the first half before the Huskies closed the frame with a 10-1 run in the final three minutes that cut the lead to just two points, 40-38, at intermission.
Gardner made her first four attempts from three-point range and was sensational in the first half, leading all players with 17 points and six rebounds at the intermission. With her 28 points, she surpassed Melissa Swartz '97 to move into eighth place on the school's all-time scoring list.
Junior
Monae Baker was also a key scorer in the opening frame, delivering six points in five minutes before having to exit with foul trouble. Baker finished with eight points and four rebounds.
Bloomsburg (10-5, 2-1 PSAC East) took the lead early in the second half and led for the majority the final frame. A three-pointer by Gardner brought SU within one point of the lead at the 2:01 mark and answered a Husky jumper with two free throws with 1:22 to play.
After a BU miss, sophomore guard
Dana Wert was fouled and made both of her free-throw attempts to put SU up by one point with 59 seconds. Sophomore guard
Shawna Wert drew a charge on the ensuing possession that set a wild sequence of events in the final 30 seconds.
SU was working the clock but forced a bad pass with 16 seconds remaining that was stolen by Bloomsburg. The Huskies had numbers working their way up the floor, but the lead pass went too far up the court. Post player Lauren Ellis got to the ball but was trapped down low, and forced a pass to the three-point line that sailed over the point guard's head.
In the ensuing scramble,
Dana Wert got her hands on the ball while the point guard fell to the floor. Wert made an uncontested lay-up, and Bloomsburg missed a long three-point attempt at the buzzer that clinched the win for the Lady Raiders.
Dana Wert had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists while
Shawna Wert had six points and four assists.
Shippensburg will host Mansfield at 1 p.m. Saturday from Heiges Field House.
