Ashley Vellucci keyed a strong offensive performance for the SU women's soccer season opener as the Lady Raiders defeated Charleston, 3-1.
Shippensburg (1-0) opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a goal by senior
Lisa Findley off an assist from fellow senior
Amanda Greenawalt. SU recorded a 9-2 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks during the opening frame.
Charleston (0-1) snuck behind the defense early in the second half and tied the score with a penalty kick. After a tripping infraction in the box, Brittany Loveland converted the attempt in the 59th minute. Freshman
Shelbie Rackley, who played the second half, ended up with the victory in her first career game and made three saves.
A smart passing play put the Lady Raiders in the lead for good. In the 64th minute, Leverentz rifled a shot into the net off an assist from senior
Alison Dowdrick. Vellucci added the insurance tally in the 78th minute.
Overall, Shippensburg recorded a 17-9 advantage in shots and also held an 8-1 margin in corner kicks.
Senior
Megan Delio started the game for the Lady Raiders and made one save. Catherine Perry made seven saves in defeat for the Golden Eagles.
Shippensburg returns to action at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7 at the University of Philadelphia.
