SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team put forth an outstanding effort on Saturday afternoon at Slippery Rock despite playing its second road game in two days. Unfortunately, SU's afternoon match with The Rock was bookended by penalty kicks for the home team, as the Lady Raiders dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime decision.
Shippensburg (5-2-1, 3-2 PSAC) fell behind twice in the first half but responded to each deficit with a goal of its own. In the 27th minute, sophomore
Katie Leverentz scored her fourth goal of the season by finishing an initial shot attempt from senior
Katie Klinger. Trailing 2-1 in the 41st minute, freshman
Meghan Mahon netted her first collegiate goal by heading in a cross from fellow freshman
Ashley Vellucci.
Senior
Megan Delio made three saves in the first half but allowed two goals. Freshman
Shelbie Rackley made three saves in 53:34 of action but was whistled for a foul in overtime that resulted in the final penalty kick. Two of the three goals allowed this year by Rackley have been on penalty kicks.
After six road games through its first eight contests, Shippensburg returns home Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Davis & Elkins.
