Ward’s Pitching Helps Softball Earn First Divisional Victory Of Season In Split With Warriors

Junior throws two complete games without allowing an earned run

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Junior southpaw Dana Ward threw a three-hit shutout in the opening game of a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader with East Stroudsburg while juniors Courtney Steele and Hope Cornell each had three hits to help the softball team earn its first divisional victory of the season, 5-0 over the Warriors. ESU rallied to win the second game, 3-2.

Shippensburg (12-20, 1-7 PSAC East) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on an RBI-single by Cornell. Junior Jill Mullan set up the opportunity with a leadoff single and a quick steal of second base.

Cornell singled to start the fourth inning and Steele homered in the next at-bat to give SU a 3-0 lead. Freshman Lizzy Wedell added an RBI-double in the inning that stretched the lead to four. Senior Kiley Abersold singled home Steele in the fifth inning.

Ward had a no-hitter through 4.1 innings of the opener and finished by allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out five batters. She kept up her strong pitching in the second game, carrying another no-hitter through 4.1 innings before the Warriors got a single in the fifth inning. Overall, Ward threw 13 innings and allowed just seven hits and two walks while striking out nine batters.

East Stroudsburg (15-20, 5-5 PSAC East) trailed the Lady Raiders through five innings of the second game after an RBI-groundout by senior Lisamarie Ramagli and an RBI-triple by Cornell. In the bottom of the sixth, Ward had gotten two outs but an error prolonged the inning, as the Warriors rallied with a string of two-out singles to take a 3-2 lead.

The Lady Raiders will host West Chester at 2:30 p.m. Friday in a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader from Robb Field.
