SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Saturday afternoon's PSAC Eastern Division women's lacrosse clash between Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg featured all the makings of a must-win game for both teams, as the score was tied with 6:03 to play and no team held a lead greater than three goals until the final minute of play. Unfortunately for the Lady Raiders, it was the visiting Warriors that recorded a 12-9 victory on Senior Day.
Shippensburg (8-9, 5-5 PSAC East) concluded its regular season with a strong effort in the second half, committing just four turnovers in the final 30 minutes of play. Sophomore
Meghan Kearney was rock-solid in goal and made several sensational stops, finishing the game with 15 saves. It is the third time this season that Kearney had 15 or more saves in one contest.
East Stroudsburg (11-7, 6-4 PSAC East) held a 5-4 advantage at halftime but neither team lead by more than one goal in the opening half. Junior
Karen Schnurr scored SU's first two goals of the game, including one on a free-position attempt, while fellow junior
Katie Brewer added two goals in the first half.
The two teams traded goals for the majority of the second half. ESU opened the second-half scoring with a goal by Michelle Mangiaruga before Shippensburg answered with a free-position goal by sophomore
Jessica Schubach.
Freshman
Sarah Chrencik answered another Mangiaruga goal with 16 minutes to play and Brewer countered another ESU tally with 13:19 to go. Just a minute later, senior
Liz DiNunno fed a beautiful pass to freshman
Roxanne Brown for a goal that tied the game at 8-8 with 12:07 to go.
Trailing 9-8 with just over six minutes to go, Brewer delivered her fourth goal of the game to tie the score once again at 9-9. However, the Warriors finished off a strong passing play with 4:27 to go and cemented their victory with two more goals late in the game.
As one might expect from such a close contest, the overall disparities in statistics were very slight. Shippensburg committed one less turnover than East Stroudsburg (18-17), recorded one less draw control (12-11) and had two more groundballs (16-14). Each goaltender made 15 saves in the game, but the Warriors totaled nine more shots.
