ERIE, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team put forth a strong effort on Saturday morning from Tullio Field and held a lead in the first half against No. 5 Mercyhurst before the Lakers countered with a run and outlasted the Lady Raiders en route to an 11-5 victory.

Shippensburg (8-6) answered an early goal by the Lakers in the opening minute with one of its own as senior Gayle Kuntzmann picked up an unassisted tally just 44 seconds into the contest. Three minutes later, junior Katie Brewer tallied off an assist from sophomore Lauren Hauck to give SU a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Raiders cut down on their turnovers on Saturday and also recorded a 20-18 edge in groundballs. Mercyhurst held a possession edge with 12 draw controls but only recorded 23 total shots against SU, as sophomore Meghan Kearney made four saves. Brewer, junior Rachael Murray and freshman Lindsey Kennedy also added goals in the game.

SU faces its second-straight nationally-ranked opponent on Sunday at noon against No. 8 Gannon.
