SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University softball team could not solve the riddles of the visiting pitchers from California (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon from Robb Field as the Lady Raiders dropped both games of a PSAC crossover doubleheader to the Vulcans, 1-0 and 7-0.
Shippensburg (13-23) received a splendid start in the opening game from sophomore
Chelsea Kendall, who allowed just one run on six hits in a complete-game effort. It was the fifth complete game of the season for Kendall, who walked just one batter while recording five strikeouts. She has allowed just two runs over her last 16 innings of work.
The Lady Raiders could only muster three singles in the opener – one each from junior
Dana Ward, junior
Courtney Steele and sophomore
Meg Lehman.
California (22-9) was backed by the solid pitching of Lauren Shaheen and Maria Greco. Shaheen struck out 10 batters in a complete-game effort to win the opener while Greco struck out five batters in 6.1 innings of the nightcap. The Vulcans issued just one walk between the two games; it was drawn in the opener by freshman
Jenn Deardorff.
SU mustered four hits in the opener – one each from Steele, Lehman, senior
Lisamarie Ramagli and freshman
Lizzy Wedell. Freshman
Shauna Byrnes pinch ran in both games and recorded a stolen base in each contest.
The Lady Raiders return to action at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday for a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader from Kutztown.
