KISSIMMEE, Fla. -
The Shippensburg University softball team struggled at the plate on a sunny and warm Sunday afternoon from the Osceola County Softball Complex, dropping a 3-1 decision to Ashland and a 2-0 decision to No. 13 Saginaw Valley State.

Shippensburg (3-8) allowed just five runs on the afternoon in its doubleheader but could only score one of its own. Junior southpaw Dana Ward pitched all 13 innings on Sunday, allowing five runs (four earned) with eight strikeouts while walking just three batters.

Ashland (1-1) loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning of the day's first game through a walk, error and infield single. One run scored on a fielder's choice before the second scored on a delayed double steal, putting the Eagles ahead 2-0. The Lady Raiders had runners on first and third with one out in the top half of the inning but could not squeak a run across the plate.

SU answered with one run in the fifth inning. After a leadoff single from sophomore Meg Lehman and a fielder's choice by senior Kiley Abersold put a runner on first base with two outs, walks by Ward and senior Lisamarie Ramagli loaded the bases. The second wild pitch of the inning by Ashland starter Emlyn Knerem got Abersold across the plate but a strikeout ended the inning.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Alyssa Kelley hit a leadoff double and came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Sam Hendrix. Knerem allowed just four hits in a complete-game effort, striking out 12 hitters.

No. 13 Saginaw Valley State (4-1) scored early runs on a squeeze play and an RBI single and rode the stellar pitching performance of Jade Fulton to the victory. Fulton was perfect from the circle while striking out 12 batters for her second win of the season. SU did achieve a rare feat in the field during the first inning, as Ward caught a pop up on a bunt that led to a triple play.

The Lady Raiders will have two days off before playing a pair of games on Wednesday from the Oren Brown Complex in Kissimmee. The first will be at 9 a.m. against Northern Kentucky and the second will be at 11 a.m. against Ferris State.
