KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Shippensburg women's lacrosse team raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first half of its contest against the Golden Bears of Kutztown on Wednesday afternoon and used its momentum to capture a 14-8 road victory in PSAC Eastern Division play.
Shippensburg (3-2, 2-1 PSAC East) received strong offensive contributions from junior
Katie Brewer and sophomore
Jessica Schubach. The two players combined for nine of the team's 14 goals, as Brewer scored a career-high five goals while Schubach added a career-high four goals. SU held a 9-3 lead at halftime.
Brewer had a banner day on the SU attack, causing three turnovers as well. She scored two goals in the first half, including the tally that proved to be the game winner at the end of the first half. Schubach achieved her hat trick in the first half and scored again with 10 minutes remaining.
Junior
Karen Schnurr opened the scoring for the Lady Raiders and finished with two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore
Lauren Hauck earned a start and provided a goal, an assist, two groundballs and one caused turnover.
Freshman
Lindsey Kennedy was all over the scoresheet, achieving a career-high four assists in addition to one goal, three groundballs and two draw controls. Junior
Rachael Murray added two goals, two assists and two groundballs.
Defensively, sophomore
Meghan Kearney made nine saves for the victory. Fellow sophomore
Meagan Borgoyn picked up four groundballs and had two caused turnovers along the back lines.
Shippensburg returns home at 1 p.m. Saturday for the first of a three-game homestand. The Lady Raiders will face No. 2 Lock Haven from Robb Sports Complex.
