WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team opened PSAC Eastern Division play by scoring 12 runs in a wild and raucous doubleheader at West Chester on a rainy Tuesday afternoon but could not come away with a victory in either game, dropping 10-3 and 11-9 decisions to the Golden Rams.

Shippensburg (7-13, 0-2 PSAC East) held a 3-0 lead through the first three innings of the nightcap on the strength of a two-run homer by junior Courtney Steele that scored junior Hope Cornell and an RBI fielder's choice by Steele that plated junior Jill Mullan. West Chester responded by scoring seven runs in the fourth inning to take the lead.

The Lady Raiders got three runs back in the top of the fifth inning to trail by just one run before the Golden Rams got four more runs in the bottom of the inning. The offensive highlights in SU's half of the fifth inning included a bases-loaded walk by Steele and a two-run single by sophomore Abby Block that bounced off the top of the center-field fence and was just mere inches from being a grand slam.

Trailing 11-6 entering the top of the seventh inning, Shippensburg still had one more rally in the works. After loading the bases with no one out, an error allowed Block to reach first and senior Lisamarie Ramagli to cross home plate. Senior Kiley Abersold then joined the game of station-to-station softball with an RBI-single that brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate.

Sophomore Meg Lehman hit into a fielder's choice for another run and freshman Jenn Deardorff then singled to re-load the bases with still just one out. With the tying run on second base, Mullan and junior Dana Ward struck out to end the contest.

In the first game, seven different Lady Raiders connected for hits, including a two-run homer by Block that gave SU a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Ward struggled from the circle en route to the loss.

The Lady Raiders will face nationally-ranked Kutztown at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the team's home-opening doubleheader from Robb Field.

Note:
Megan Harbaugh, the Golden Ram first baseman, posted an intriguing stat line in the opener by going 0-0 at the plate with four RBIs…she hit a sacrifice fly in each of her four plate appearances during the first game…all four were hit to center field as well.
