BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team rebounded from a tough loss in the opener of its Tuesday afternoon doubleheader against Bloomsburg by scoring 12 runs in the nightcap to salvage a split. The Red Raiders dropped the opener 6-5 before taking the second game, 12-7.
Shippensburg (8-17, 4-2 PSAC East) had an effective start in the opener from sophomore
Ted Williams, who survived an early three-run homer to allow just four hits and four runs through six innings while striking out seven. The Red Raiders got an RBI-single in the second inning from sophomore second baseman
Eric Herman but trailed 4-1 after two.
In the fourth inning, the Red Raiders tied the score with a two-run single by junior center fielder
AJ Czap and an RBI-groundout by junior first baseman
Kris Kullman. SU took the lead in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by sophomore right fielder
Cody Kulp.
Bloomsburg (5-17, 1-5 PSAC East) faced sophomore
Nick Umberger in its final at-bat and got a runner on with one out as a result of an error. Umberger induced a comebacker to the next batter, but his throw to second base was errant and resulted in both runners being safe. After a walk loaded the bases, Tony Donofry hit a two-run double that ended the game.
In the nightcap, the Red Raiders raced out to a 10-0 lead through two innings and never looked back. A three-run home run by sophomore designated hitter
Jimmy Miller was the highlight of a five-run first inning for SU, while a two-run double by freshman catcher
Kyle Hollingsworth paced a five-run second inning. Czap homered in the seventh inning to cap the Red Raider scoring.
Czap went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with a home run, three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base.
Jimmy Miller was 4-for-8 with the three-run homer and four runs scored. Uphouse also had three hits on the day while Kulp's 10-game hitting streak came to end in the nightcap.
Freshman
Josh Scott earned the victory in the nightcap, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in six innings. He struck out four batters. Kulp pitched the final inning.
The Red Raiders will travel to play Seton Hill on Thursday. The doubleheader starts at 2 p.m.
