OMAHA, Neb. –
Redshirt junior wrestling co-captain Chris Barrick, ranked No. 8 in the nation at 174 pounds, achieved All-American status from the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships with a fifth-place finish on Saturday afternoon from Sapp Fieldhouse.

Barrick maintained the rich tradition of Shippensburg wrestling by becoming the first Red Raider All-American in two years. SU has now had at least one All-American in six of the last seven seasons dating back to 2004.

After qualifying for the national championships last year but failing to place, Barrick's 2010 performance makes him the first SU All-American since Steve Fittery in 2008. Barrick will enter his senior season in seventh place on Shippensburg's all-time wins list with an overall record of 88-19.

Barrick's Saturday began with one of the most rousing duals of the entire tournament against Nebraska-Kearney's Kamarudeen “Marty” Usman, a redshirt senior ranked No. 1 in the nation with a 42-1 record. Usman, a two-time All-American was challenged by Barrick for the whole match but emerged with a 6-5 decision.

After his bout with Usman, Barrick faced regional rival Anthony Petrella of Gannon. Petrella avenged a 6-4 loss to Barrick at the Super Region I Championships by recording a victory by fall in 3:43. It marked the first time Barrick had been pinned since the conclusion of last year's national championships.

Undaunted, Barrick continued to fight and finished his day with a match against Shamus O'Grady from St. Cloud State. Both competitors had reached the All-American brackets with two victories on Friday. To close out his 2009-10 season, Barrick recorded a 6-3 decision over O'Grady to cap off the year with a 23-5 mark.
