Hot Shooting In Second Half Not Enough For Red Raiders In 92-84 Loss to West Chester

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg men's basketball team shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half and scored 54 points in the final 20 minutes on Wednesday night from Heiges Field House but could not overcome a 22-point deficit in a 92-84 PSAC Eastern Division loss to West Chester.

Shippensburg (11-19, 4-9 PSAC East) honored senior Brian Oleksiak and Daziah Miller before the game but yielded 46 first-half points to the Golden Rams, who shot 58 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play. SU trailed by 16 points at intermission and got three possessions with some inspired hustle late in the contest.

The team's on-court leader on Wednesday night was freshman point guard Lamar Jackson, who totaled a team-high 15 points. He shot 50 percent from the field, dished out seven assists and recorded three steals while committing just one turnover.

Freshman guard Wali Hepburn wowed the crowd in the first half with a mid-air putback dunk worthy of any highlight reel. His hustle and strong play in 19 minutes off the bench resulted in a career-high nine points and eight rebounds. Five of Hepburn's rebounds were offensive.

Two other players posted double figures for Shippensburg. Sophomore guard Craig Van Scyoc was 3-of-5 from three-point range and converted all four of his free-throw attempts for 13 points. Redshirt freshman forward Will Kirkland was the beneficiary of several solid passes and made 5-of-7 shot attempts for 10 total points.

Oleksiak led the team in rebounds with seven in addition to six points and three assists. Redshirt sophomore forward Will Royal battled on despite three first-half fouls, finishing with nine points, three rebounds and a block. Redshirt sophomore guard Dane Lauber added nine points and two assists.

West Chester (16-10, 5-8 PSAC East) got to the free-throw line 40 times in Wednesday night's game and shot 73 percent from the charity stripe. The visitors got 21 points from Kehinde Roberts and a double-double from senior post presence Ralph Hegamin (11 points, 10 rebounds). Harley Williamson added 18 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Shippensburg will conclude its regular season on Saturday at 3 p.m. from Cheyney.
