S. Wert Hits Buzzer-Beater; Women’s Basketball Never Lets Up In 94-92 Double-OT Win at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Shawna Wert hit a jumper at the buzzer of the second overtime period in Saturday's season opener as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team escaped the Butcher Center with a hard-fought 94-92 victory over Shepherd.

Shippensburg (1-0) was led in scoring by senior Kasey Gardner, who finished with 21 points and five rebounds while making 8-of-9 free-throw attempts. Newcomer Monae Baker was stellar, posting 20 points and 18 rebounds in her Lady Raider debut while shooting 8-of-11 from the field.

Several players making their Lady Raider debut stepped up with huge contributions. Limited in the post, freshman Ashley Giedemann delivered nine points - three of which came on a shot at the end of regulation that forced the first overtime.

Freshman Sarah Strybuc hit a shot at the end of the first overtime and assisted on Wert's buzzer beater in double overtime. She finished with 12 points, four rebounds and two assists.

The Lady Raiders host the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic next Friday and Saturday from Heiges Field House.
