Red Raider Football Cannot Establish Offensive Rhythm In Home Loss to No. 20 Bloomsburg, 23-3

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team struggled offensively on a windy afternoon from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium, totaling just eight first downs while having to withstand 48 rushes from the visiting Huskies in a 23-3 loss to No. 20 Bloomsburg.

Shippensburg (1-6, 0-4 PSAC East) was able to limit the effect of Husky tailback Franklyn Quiteh, who entered the game as Division II's leading rusher averaging over seven yards per carry and having totaled over 1,000 yards through six games. Quiteh finished the afternoon averaging 4.2 yards per carry and with his second-lowest rushing output of the season.

The story was the Husky defense, which limited Shippensburg on the ground and through the air. SU completed just nine passes and its longest reception went to sophomore Mike Frenette for 17 yards – snapping a streak of 38 consecutive games in which SU had a pass completion of at least 25 yards.

Bloomsburg (6-1) controlled the ball for nearly 36 minutes and ultimately dictated the pace of the game by keeping it on the ground and using a variety of different backs. The Huskies scored on the opening drive of the game, but SU responded on its second drive with a 25-yard field goal by freshman Drew Newcomer – the first of his collegiate career.

Sophomore quarterback Steven Adams was under steady pressure during the game and completed just 9-of-21 passes while being sacked four times. Senior Kevin Marshall led SU with three receptions.

Redshirt freshman Nate Schmidt was forced to punt 10 times and averaged 35 yards per attempt. It was the most punts in a game for Shippensburg since Oct. 25, 2008 in a 21-0 loss to Bloomsburg that also marked the last time that SU finished a game without scoring at least two touchdowns.

Despite a rash of injuries, several players stood out defensively for Shippensburg. Earning his most playing time of the season, freshman defensive back Mike Goode tied for the team lead with 10 tackles, including seven solo stops.

Freshman safety Tyriq Kershaw made his first collegiate start and also had 10 tackles, including 1.5 for loss. He also forced the only turnover of the game, ripping the ball out of BU quarterback Pat Carey's hands on a fourth-down sneak and recovering the same fumble that he forced.

Senior Andy Horn had a sack for a loss of seven yards and had two tackles for loss in the game. He has recorded a solo sack in each of the last three games.

Shippensburg will have its Homecoming game next weekend at 1 p.m. when it hosts Cheyney. The Wolves led 21-20 at halftime on Saturday against regional rival West Chester before dropping a 48-34 decision from Farrell Stadium.
