SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - A pair of Lady Raiders recorded double-doubles on Wednesday evening from Heiges Field House as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team recorded its most assists in a 212-game span and led by as many as 40 points in the second half during a convincing 80-44 rout over Bloomsburg in a PSAC Eastern Division contest.
Shippensburg (9-12, 2-3 PSAC East) was in total control, but specifically broke through after the opening 10 minutes with an explosive 20-0 run that deflated the momentum of the Huskies and propelled the Lady Raiders to a 45-point first half.
During the seven-plus minute span, SU's defense forced five turnovers and held Bloomsburg to 0-of-7 shooting from the field while the Lady Raiders had five different players score during the decisive run. In all, Shippensburg closed final 11 minutes 13 seconds of the first half on a 30-3 run.
In the dominating first half, SU forced 13 turnovers, scored 20 points off those opportunities, had 13 second-chance points and 11 points from its bench. Overall, the Lady Raiders were an efficient 9-of-15 from three-point range while Bloomsburg was 5-of-31 from distance, including an 0-of-10 performance by Husky freshman Kayla Oxenrider.
The Lady Raiders also cleaned up on the glass with 44 rebounds. Junior
Kasey Gardner continued her outstanding play with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, shooting 4-of-7 from the field including three trifectas and hustling all over the court in her 29 minutes of action.
Redshirt freshman
Caitlin Bamberger, the reigning PSAC Eastern Division Freshman of the Week, earned her fourth start of the season and recorded her second consecutive double-double, totaling 10 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes.
Senior
Lauren Beckley led all scorers with 18 points to go along with six rebounds, a season-high five assists, three steals and one block. She moved into fourth place on the PSAC's all-time scoring list with 2,171 points and needs just two points to move into a three-way tie for second place.
Balanced scoring was vital as nine different players scored points, five players hit at least one three-pointer and four different players posted double figures. Senior guard
Sheila Wasser went over double figures for the third time this season with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Sophomore guard
Erin Varley also had a season-high nine points in addition to three assists in 15 strong minutes off the bench.
While she may have been held scoreless, freshman guard
Kerry Conroy was a smooth distributor on Wednesday night with a career-high eight assists compared to just three turnovers. Seven different players had at least one assist for SU while the team had its second positive assist-to-turnover ratio in a game this season.
Shippensburg returns to the floor at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Cheyney from Heiges Field House. The Wolves handed No. 24 Millersville its first divisional loss of the season on Wednesday night from Cope Hall.
Notes: Shippensburg's 24 assists were the most it has recorded in a game since totaling 25 on Dec. 2, 2002 against the University of the Sciences.
