SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Senior forward
Lauren Beckley became the fifth player in PSAC women's basketball history to compile 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds on Wednesday night from Heiges Field House as the Lady Raiders opened Eastern Division play with a 62-39 victory over Mansfield.
Beckley, Shippensburg's all-time leading scorer, moved past California (Pa.) alum Sara McKinney into sole possession of fifth place on the PSAC's career scoring list and has compiled 2,122 points in 100 career games. She led all scorers on Wednesday with 21 points and 11 rebounds for her 53rd double-double while adding three steals, two assists and two blocks.
Shippensburg (8-9. 1-0 PSAC East) overcame a slow first half with balanced scoring and some smart passing in the second half, finishing the game with 17 assists compared to 16 turnovers. Junior forward
Kasey Gardner, who is now just five points short of 1,000 for her career, finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, a team-high four assists and two steals.
Senior guard
Sheila Wasser continued her strong play with a career-high 13 points in a career-high 38 minutes, shooting 5-of-8 from the field. She also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists.
Mansfield (3-9) remained with six points of the Lady Raiders at halftime but never got going offensively, shooting 25 percent from the field in the contest. The Mountaineers were still within six points at the 12:57 mark before a 14-4 run by Shippensburg broke the door open. Mallory Moore had 13 points and nine points for the Mountaineers in the losing effort.
For the Lady Raiders, redshirt freshman forward
Caitlin Bamberger scored two points but grabbed six rebounds (including three on the offensive glass) while sophomore forward
Kaitlin Capriccio had four points and two rebounds.
Shippensburg returns to the floor at 1 p.m. on Saturday from Koehler Fieldhouse against East Stroudsburg. The Warriors dropped an 85-52 decision this evening to Kutztown.
