SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University football will continue its two-game road trip to start the season on Saturday against PSAC Western Division opponent Edinboro. Kickoff from Sox Harrison Stadium is set for 1 p.m. The Fighting Scots have won the last four meetings between the two teams.
The game is being broadcast live on Shippensburg University's student radio station, WSYC 88.7 FM and on the internet at www.wsyc.org (radio pre-game starts at 12:50 p.m.). Interim sports information director
Bill Morgal will be handling the play-by-play duties as best as he possibly can.
The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) has declared this weekend a national AFCA/NCAA Respect Weekend. Edinboro and Shippensburg, along with all football teams throughout all divisions of the NCAA, will take part in the AFCA initiative in which both teams and both head coaches will shake hands prior to the game.
Shippensburg is coming off a tough loss to regional rival Shepherd in which the team allowed five scoring plays of 30 yards or greater. Take away those mistakes, and the Red Raiders held the Rams to just 147 yards of offense.
Shippensburg also held an 11-minute edge in time of possession in the contest, totaled 22 first downs and had control of the ball for all but 2 minutes and 30 seconds during the third quarter. The Red Raiders also converted 12-of-21 third-down attempts and scored on four of their five trips into the red zone.
The Red Raiders, who were picked to finish fifth in the 2009 PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches Poll ahead of Kutztown, Millersville and Cheyney, is in the midst of three consecutive non-conference games to start the season.
Edinboro is in the midst of four straight home games to start the 2009 season. The Fighting Scots opened the season with a 42-30 win over West Liberty State last Saturday — marking the second consecutive season-opening victory over the Hilltoppers and the third opening day win out of four years under current head coach Scott Browning.
If the Fighting Scots emerge victorious, it would give Edinboro its second straight season with a 2-0 start and mark the third time in four seasons under head coach Scott Browning that the team has achieved the feat.
Edinboro leads the overall series 24-23-1, with the Fighting Scots having won the last four meetings. Shippensburg last defeated Edinboro in the 2004 season, the year in which the Red Raiders won the PSAC Western Division.
Shippensburg does hold a distinct edge in home games, however, as the Red Raiders are 15-8 against the Fighting Scots in such contests (including an 11-7 mark at Seth Grove Stadium.). Additionally, Edinboro holds a 16-8-1 record in home games played primarily at Sox Harrison Stadium.
The two teams first met in 1957 with Shippensburg earning a 20-14 victory at Sox Harrison Stadium. Under Coach Rocky Rees, the Red Raiders are 8-11 against the Fighting Scots. Edinboro has scored 121 points in its last three games against Shippensburg.
