KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The No. 1 Shippensburg University field hockey team weathered its toughest challenge of the young season in a Tuesday evening showdown against No. 4 Kutztown from University Field, earning a 2-1 victory while getting a season-high eight saves from senior goalkeeper
Amanda Houser.
Shippensburg (7-0) opened the scoring at 21:26 with the only goal of the first half. Senior
Jamie Doughty, who has been fighting an illness all week, remained tough and scored her fifth goal of the season by finishing a shot at the left corner of the cage off an assist from freshman
Jordyn Beam.
The score remained at 1-0 until the final five minutes of the game. With 4:55 to play, senior
Laura Wylde took a feed from senior
Mariah Wooters and snuck a shot past KU keeper Emily Falko to give the Lady Raiders a two-goal cushion. The tally proved to be the game-winner, as Kutztown's Jenna Gregory knocked home a rebound with 3:59 to play.
The Lady Raiders fought off a relentless Golden Bear attack that totaled 17 penalty corners and out-shot SU by a 13-12 margin. Houser's defense proved vital in the contest. Through seven games, she continues to lead the nation in save percentage and goals-against average.
Shippensburg will return to action on Thursday at 4 p.m. from Robb Sports Complex with a match against PSAC Eastern Division opponent C.W. Post.
