SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University football team opened its home schedule on Saturday afternoon from Seth Grove Stadium with a rousing 49-7 victory over PSAC West rival Lock Haven that gives the Red Raiders their first win in a home opener and first winning record overall since the 2006 season.
Shippensburg (2-1) dominated the game from a territorial standpoint and accrued 471 total yards of offense in the contest. Redshirt senior quarterback
Chad DiFebbo was efficient for the second straight contest, completing 11-of-14 passes for 199 yards and one touchdown before yielding way to the reserves in the second half. His only interception came on a Hail Mary at the end of the first half.
Overall, four different quarterbacks, six different tailbacks and six different wide receivers were the beneficiaries of SU's offensive boon - averaging 8.0 yards per play through 59 plays from scrimmage. No running back carried the ball more than nine times, but SU still managed 6.1 yards per rush and compiled 232 total yards on the ground.
Shippensburg opened the scoring less than four minutes into the contest with six-play, 76-yard drive that was capped off with a 3-yard touchdown run by redshirt sophomore fullback
Chad Halterman. Halterman finished the day with 21 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns and one fumble while filling in for redshirt freshman
Kevin Herod.
On Lock Haven's first play on the ensuing drive, redshirt senior linebacker
Josh Simmons stepped in front of a Jarret Kratzer pass, intercepted it and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown, giving the Red Raiders a 14-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. Simmons, the reigning PSAC Eastern Division Defensive Player of the Week, finished with seven tackles, including one sack for nine yards, and another half-tackle for a loss.
With the team's first drive of the second quarter, the Red Raiders would extend their lead to three possessions. A 12-play, 82-yard drive that lasted nearly eight minutes resulted in another short plunge from Halterman on a fourth-and-goal play. Shippensburg held a 28-0 lead at halftime after DiFebbo connected on a 63-yard bomb to junior
Chase DiFebbo with 1:07 to play in the half.
The defensive once again produced an outstanding effort, forcing three turnovers, recording 12 tackles for loss (including five sacks), five quarterback hurries and limiting the Bald Eagle offense to just 146 total yards. Redshirt freshman
Cody Fleming was among the players who stepped up with a breakthrough performance, totaling 3.5 tackles for loss (including one sack) and a quarterback hurry.
Redshirt junior tailback
Kevin Marshall led the team in rushing with 94 yards on just seven carries and produced the team's fifth touchdown of the day with a 33-yard run into the end zone at the 8:04 mark.
Lock Haven (0-2) produced its only points of the afternoon in the waning moments of the third quarter. An 11-yard touchdown run by Ibrahim Smith capped off a 63-yard drive that provided the Bald Eagles their first points of the season.
Redshirt senior tailback
Nick Klinepeter and redshirt sophomore tailback
Roshaan McCain both reached paydirt with fourth-quarter touchdown runs to cap off the scoring. Klinepeter finished with 21 yards on three carries, McCain had 24 yards on seven carries, and true freshmen
Pat Schuhl broke through for 71 yards on five carries. Among Schuhl's total was a 62-yard scamper that set up the final touchdown.
Shippensburg will return to action next Saturday from Seth Grove Stadium with the team's PSAC Eastern Division opener against East Stroudsburg. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
