LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University softball team will once again travel to Lock Haven beginning on Friday to compete in one of the two pools of play for the 2009 Atlantic Region Softball Championships. The host, Lock Haven, will accompany the Lady Raiders, California (Pa.) and CIAA champion Bowie State in competition that is scheduled for Friday through Sunday.
Lock Haven, the host site, will likely either videocast or radio broadcast every game of the regional tournament. The links will be provided when available. Directions, lodging, and other information can be found on Lock Haven's tournament page which is available
here.
Shippensburg (25-17) earned its bid on Sunday night as the NCAA released the field of 64 teams for the postseason. The Lady Raiders will play the region's No. 4 seed California (Pa.) at 1:30 p.m. on Friday after the contest between Lock Haven and Bowie State in the double-elimination opening round.
Kutztown, No. 2 in the region, will host the bottom portion of the Atlantic Region bracket this weekend in play that features Bloomsburg, West Chester and WVIAC champion West Virginia Wesleyan. The winners at each site will advance to the super regionals on May 15-16.
The last time the Lady Raiders and Vulcans met was in the 2008 regionals. SU dropped a heartbreaker in a 2-1 loss at Kutztown. Shippensburg built a 1-0 lead early in the third inning before surrendering two unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning.
This weekend's appearance in the regionals marks the eighth-straight appearance for the Lady Raiders in NCAA regional play. SU finished sixth at last year's regional tournament held at Kutztown. During the eight-year run under Coach Brookens, the team's best finish came in 2004 when Shippensburg captured third place at the national championships.
