Going Out Strong: Women's Lacrosse Wraps Up Season With 9-4 Road Victory Over Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Shippensburg University lacrosse team closed out the 2009 regular season on Wednesday afternoon from Chryst Field with its best defensive performance of the campaign, allowing a season-low four goals en route to a 9-4 victory over PSAC East opponent Millersville.

Shippensburg (9-8, 5-5 PSAC East) received two goals each from senior Beth Long, junior Gayle Kuntzmann and sophomore Rachael Murray while also receiving tallies from junior Liz DiNunno, senior Kelsey Browning and freshman Jessica Schubach.

The Lady Raiders took the lead less than two minutes into the contest on a goal by Kuntzmann and led 3-0 after the first 10 minutes. Shippensburg nearly held the Marauders to just one goal in the first half before a late Marauder goal made the score 6-2 at halftime. Murray wrapped up the scoring with 11:52 to play.

Wednesday marked the final game for head coach Naomi Radio, an excellent leader and teacher for the Lady Raiders who guided the team to 21 victories in her three seasons while mentoring five all-conference selections. The team made the PSAC Tournament in her first season with the club. Radio will concentrate her time with her family, including husband Tim and son Noah.

The contest also marked the final collegiate contests for Long, Browning, senior Hannah Sperber and senior Hannah Taylor. The quartet combined for 88 goals, 192 points and 305 groundballs over the course of the past four seasons with the team.

Browning has been an integral defender for Shippensburg and has displayed a solid skill level during her career. As a junior she finished third on the team in caused turnovers and fourth in groundballs. She has missed just one game over the past three seasons and scored 18 goals during her career.

Long was rock steady at defense and is a two-time All-PSAC selection (First Team in '07, Second Team in '08). She ranked second on the team last year in groundballs and caused turnovers while leading the team during her sophomore campaign in groundballs. She has only missed two games in her career.

Sperber has been a consistent scoring threat over the past four seasons for the Lady Raiders. Her highlight season came as a sophomore when she finished fourth on the team with a career-high 22 goals. Overall, she has totaled 33 goals in 63 games while picking up 32 groundballs.

Taylor has been a valuable midfield presence during her time with the Lady Raiders. She rebounded from injury during her junior season with six points in 17 games and has started all of the team's games during her senior season. Taylor has scored 11 goals and picked up over 25 groundballs in her career.
