SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University lacrosse team battled against the No. 6 team in Division II on Saturday afternoon from Robb Sports Complex but could not withstand an offensive flurry at the end of the first half from visiting Mercyhurst, dropping a 16-5 decision to the Lakers.

Shippensburg (4-3) battled with the Lakers over the first 20 minutes of the contest, as the teams played solid defense and were tied 2-2 after scrapping together just four goals over that span. The visiting Lakers, however, caught fire in a hurry by scoring eight unanswered goals over the final nine minutes of the half, including three in the final minute, to lead 10-2 at intermission.

Mercyhurst (4-0) continued its offensive onslaught with the first three goals of the second half until junior Gayle Kuntzmann ended the 11-goal run for the Lakers with a free-position tally with 21:31 remaining. Kuntzmann finished with the goal, three groundballs and two draw controls.

Junior Liz DiNunno had a solid game for Shippensburg, scoring two goals and recording an assist along with three draw controls and two groundballs. Despite the difference on the scoreboard, the Lady Raiders finished just one draw control and two groundballs behind Mercyhurst.

Shippensburg will finish its three-game homestand with a crucial PSAC Eastern Division contest against Bloomsburg on Monday from Robb Sports Complex. The opening draw begins at 4 p.m.
