GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Shippensburg University head softball coach
Bob Brookens won his 300th career game with the Lady Raiders on Saturday afternoon after a 6-1 victory over Charleston from the Glenville State Tournament. SU also earned a 4-2 victory over Seton Hill and has now won six of its last seven.
Brookens, in his ninth season with Shippensburg, has won at least 27 games in all eight of his previous seasons and the 2009 squad is en route to extending that streak. He is the second winningest coach in program history and has been leading the program since 2001.
Shippensburg (11-6) received a strong start in the opener from freshman
Emily Parkins, who struck out five batters in six innings while allowing just two earned runs. Parkins earned her second victory of the season for the Lady Raiders.
Seton Hill (8-3) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning but the Lady Raiders responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, capped off by a home run for the second consecutive day from junior first basewoman
Lisamarie Ramagli. Her two-run shot came after an RBI-double from sophomore
Hope Cornell and a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Courtney Steele.
In the nightcap, the Lady Raiders received an all-around performance from Knopf, who pitched another complete game and allowed just one unearned run while striking out seven. Her record improved to 5-3 and at the plate she smacked a solo home run to help Shippensburg to the victory.
Sophomore left fielder
Jill Mullan continued her strong start to the season with consecutive RBI-triples in the third and fourth innings. Mullan finished the day with four extra-base hits, three runs and a stolen base through the two games. Cornell had three doubles on Saturday, while senior catcher
Rachelle Wedell had two hits and two RBIs in the win over Charleston.
Shippensburg had its game against Salem International postponed due to rain. The Lady Raiders are scheduled to take on West Liberty State on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
