SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University baseball team opened divisional play on Friday afternoon from Fairchild Field with a doubleheader split against Bloomsburg, winning the opener 5-1 before dropping the nightcap 1-0.
Shippensburg (7-13, 1-1 PSAC East), who is hosting all four games of the series due to unplayable field conditions in Bloomsburg, received dynamite pitching performances from senior starters
Tim Freshour and
Andrew Burke. Each pitcher threw a complete game on Friday and the duo combined to scatter just nine hits while striking out 12 batters.
Bloomsburg (9-8, 1-1 PSAC East) took the lead in the opener with an unearned run in the first inning but the Raiders quickly responded with three runs in the top of the third inning. The barrage was capped by a two-run home run for freshman
Cody Kulp, his team-leading fourth of the season, which gave SU a 3-1 lead. The Raiders added a run in the fourth by scoring on a wild pitch and another in the fifth on an RBI-double from freshman
Tyler Uphouse to cap off the scoring.
Freshour faced just four batters over the minimum for his second consecutive complete game victory, allowing just six hits and an unearned run while not walking a batter and recording six strikeouts. In his last two games, Freshour has allowed just two earned runs while striking out 10 batters in 14 innings.
The second game was a tried and true pitcher's duel, as Burke locked horns with BU hurler Vinny Voorhees. The Huskies again plated an opening run on an RBI-single from first baseman Kevin Ward, but that run would hold up as Voorhees went the distance, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out three batters.
Burke had his best outing of the young season, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out six batters. He twice picked runners off first base in the contest and has now yielded just one run over his last 11.2 innings of work.
Shippensburg returns to action on Saturday from Fairchild Field with another doubleheader against the Huskies. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
