SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University lacrosse team put a scare into the No. 1-ranked squad in Division II on Tuesday afternoon from Robb Sports Complex but could not hold on down the stretch as the Lady Raiders dropped a 15-6 decision to West Chester.
Shippensburg (2-2, 0-1 PSAC East) gave up a goal in the first minute but battled back and executed a skillful and disciplined attack against a pensive and cautious Golden Ram squad that allowed the Lady Raiders to take a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes to play in the opening half.
Sophomore
Karen Schnurr and junior
Liz DiNunno each netted first-half goals, and DiNunno assisted on a second tally from Schnurr just 35 seconds before halftime that left the score 3-3 at intermission.
West Chester (3-0, 1-0 PSAC East) re-gained the lead on a free-position attempt early in the second half but Shippensburg once again tied the score after a free-position goal for DiNunno. Junior
Gayle Kuntzmann finished two outstanding runs with goals and brought the Lady Raiders within 7-6 at the 15:10 mark but the Golden Rams finished the game with eight consecutive goals.
Senior
Kelsey Browning had a phenomenal game defensively for Shippensburg, picking up five groundballs and recording three caused turnovers along the backline. Freshman goalkeeper
Meghan Kearney continued her outstanding work between the cage, recording 15 saves and stopping several point-blank opportunities while picking up six groundballs.
Shippensburg will return to action on Sunday, March 15 with a neutral-site contest against Queens (N.C.) from Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland. Game time is set for noon.
