Shippensburg University Wrestlers Split Their Saturday Triangular At West Liberty State

Raiders defeat Carson-Newman but fall to the Hilltoppers

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The No. 20 Shippensburg wrestling team competed in a triangular on Saturday afternoon from the Academic Sports and Recreation Complex on the campus of West Liberty State College. The Raiders dropped a 26-13 decision to the homestanding Hilltoppers before defeating No. 11 Carson-Newman, 25-16.

Shippensburg (7-6-1) continues to have several wrestlers under the weather, battling flu and other illnesses, but the Raiders persevered against the Eagles in the second of its two Saturday matches with several outstanding performances.

The highlight of the day came at 157 pounds, where red-shirt sophomore David Sunderland survived two first-period throws and came back from a 12-7 deficit to earn a 14-12 decision over Carson-Newman's Aymen Habiballah. Sunderland was also remained right with West Liberty's Mitch Smith before falling in the opener.

Red-shirt sophomore Chris Barrick continued his outstanding season with two more major decisions, raising his season total to six and his record to 19-3. Barrick totaled 22 points on the day and only allowed two escapes against him.

Red-shirt junior Jon Hade continued to battle this week and after being forced to take a medical forfeit in his match against Mitch Knapp, he never backed down in a nine-minute battle with Carson-Newman's Landon Hall and survived rideouts for a 3-2 double-overtime decision.

Red-shirt junior Nate Nauroth shut out Kayne Melko 2-0 in his opener before winning by forfeit against Carson-Newman. Freshman Taylor Knight wrestled well despite having to compete at heavyweight agains West Liberty State. He nearly pulled off a victory against West Liberty before dropping a 6-5 decision, and wrestled to a 4-2 score against Carson-Newman. 

Shippensburg will return to action on Saturday, February 14 with a home dual meet against Gannon at 5 p.m. The Raiders will honor Wilson an red-shirt junior Andrew Jones in senior night festivities before the meet.
